Texas

The Texas craft beer scene has been growing the past few years now that liquor laws are easing up a bit for them. Every time I go back to the city there is a new brewery or craft beer bar. Chances are you’ll be near a brewery wherever you may be, so stop in and help support their growing craft!

Brewery Reviews

Austin

  1. Black Star Co-op:
    • About the Space:
      • Large industrial style brewpub with some delicious comfort food. They also have a pet friendly patio (but who doesn’t in TX?).
    • About the Beer:
      • I have mixed feelings about their beer, but overall they are good. The do have other locally brewed beers if you can’t find something you like. I enjoyed the Double Dee ESB and the Elba Pale Wheat Ale.
  2. Hops And Grains Brewing Co.:
    • About the Space:
      • Smaller microbrewery that has a taproom with indoor and outdoor seating. They have a lot of bar games you can play with your friends, making for a fun time. When I was there you could only buy a pint glass and get “free” samples of the beer.
    • About the Beer:
      • Pretty standard offerings for beer, with nothing too fancy. I liked their Alt-eration Altbier and the Pale Dog Pale Ale.
  3. Jester King Brewery:
    • About the Space:
      • Located in the countryside on a farmhouse, this is an awesome place to hang out with friends. You can wander the grounds with your beer and partake in several outdoor games. If the weather is chilly, there is ample seating inside at multiple locations throughout their property.
    • About the Beer:
      • Some of the best beer I have had in all of Texas. They specialize in farmhouse and wild ales, so their beers might not be for everyone. If you like more Belgian style beers then definitely come here! I loved the Imperial Cabinet Wild Ale and the Wytchmaker Farmhouse Rye IPA.
  4. Pinthouse Pizza:
    • About the Space:
      • Pizza and beer… what more do you need?!?! Communal style seating throughout and they have some awesome pizza / food. Worth a stop when in town – you won’t be disappointed!
    • About the Beer:
      • Some really tasty offerings to wash down all that pizza. Their beers tend to be a little more hoppy, but that’s what I like! I really enjoyed their Bearded Seal Irish Stout and Man O’ War IPA.

Dallas

  1. Braindead Brewing:
    • About the Space:
      • Hip, alternative feeling brewpub that is overall a nice place to relax. They have a great patio plus more seating inside. They also have an excellent menu with creative comfort food. Put this on your list if you’re in Deep Ellum.
    • About the Beer:
      • Every time I come here their beer keeps getting better. They offer your standard styles of beer, but they have been getting more into barrel aged and creative offerings. I thought their Given To Rye To Rye Brown Ale was fantastic, and the Gemutlich Oktoberfest was solid.
  2. Community Beer Company:
    • About the Space:
      • Huge taproom, which is essentially just open space in the brewery itself. They have limited hours, mainly on weekends. Lots of seating throughout and a food truck onsite to satisfy your hunger.
    • About the Beer:
      • They have a decent range of styles that are all solid. I really like their Mosaic IPA and the Hefeweizen was tasty as well.
  3. Deep Ellum Brewing Company:
    • About the Space:
      • Alternative brewery that has quite the grungy feel to it. They have food trucks on occasion. This is nice place to come when Deep Ellum gets really crazy and… weird(?)… since they are not on the main drag.
    • About the Beer:
      • Some of the best beer in Dallas, so make a point to come here when in Deep Ellum. They have a beer for everyone, so try a flight if you can’t make up your mind. I really like their Raspberry Play Date Sour Ale and Dreamcrusher Douple IPA.
  4. Grapevine Craft Brewery:
    • About the Space:
      • Smaller brewery with a taproom and nice beer garden. They will occasionally have a food truck on site.
    • About the Beer:
      • They offer the classic styles, but nothing too impressive. Still come here if you are in Grapevine since there isn’t much else around for good beer. I liked the Lakefire Dry Hopped Rye Ale and the Nightwatch Oatmeal Stout.
  5. Pegasus City Brewing:
    • About the Space:
      • Renovated warehouse with games and seating inside. Fun spot to come hang out with friends.
    • About the Beer:
      • Only have about 6-8 taps of your standard beer selection; All of them were good. I liked their Nine Volt Belgian Tripel and Sixth Floor Porter.
  6. Peticolas Brewing:
    • About the Space:
      • They did a great job remodeling the warehouse they are in. This is a multi-level building with lots of light and bench seating. They also have a plenty of bar games and a ping pong table!
    • About the Beer:
      • Some of the best beer in the Dallas area, but a lot of them are higher in ABV, so be careful! I thought their Great Scot! Scotch Ale and Black Curtains Imperial Stout.
  7. Texas Ale Project:
    • About the Space:
      • Large taproom that offers tours, some fun games, and sometimes music/live events.
    • About the Beer:
      • Nothing too creative, just your basic craft beer offerings and styles. I really liked their 100 Million Angels Singing Imperial IPA and their Payne Pils was just OK.

Fort Worth

  1. Rahr & Sons Brewing:
    • About the Space:
      • Spacious brewery that they offer tours at on the weekends. Fun place to hang out as you are inside the main brewing facility.
    • About the Beer:
      • One of the more popular breweries in Texas, with some decent beer overall. They have a good range of styles on at any time. Try the Ugly Pug Schwarzbier or the Summertime Wheat.

Galveston

  1. Galveston Island Brewing Company:
    • About the Space:
      • A small taproom just off the touristy strip in Galveston. They have plenty of seating inside and out, so you can hang out all day long. They don’t serve food, but let you order in.
    • About the Beer:
      • For being in a tourist town, they have some solid beers and have a good range of styles to choose from. I thought their Mosaic IPA was fantastic, and their Blue Bridge Amber was delicious as well.

Houston

  1. Flying Sauce Draught Emporium:
    • About the Space:
      • Cool restaurant/bar in downtown, right near Busch Stadium. They have some very tasty food offerings. Stop here before or after a game!
    • About the Beer:
      • Ok, so not really a brewery, but I love coming here because they have dozens of styles on tap to choose from, plus more in bottles. One of my favorite beer bars (that can only be found in the South!

      • Huge beer hall to hang out at for some pub grub or just some tasty beers.

      • One of the better breweries in the Houston area.
